Outpatient Therapy Services

What can I expect from Outpatient Therapy Services?

Outpatient Therapy is the professional process carried out between client and clinician to enable individuals, families, and couples to develop skills in order to promote health and wellbeing. Therapy is utilized to mobilize growth, embrace strengths and successes, and resolve issues providing detriment to a client's personal welfare. This process embodies attention to and consideration of diversity and individual unique qualities.

What makes a Marital and Family Therapist unique?

MFT’s are unique because we look at issues causing distress as something that is highly affected by and sometimes rooted in family and intimate relationships, not one person. We are specially trained to work with multiple people at one time and help everyone find a common goal to work toward in order to effectively treat a problem. MFT’s are also similar in some ways to other mental health professionals. We are one of the 5 core mental health professions recognized by the government and managed care and possess training to diagnose and treat a wide range of mental and emotional disorders.

Can I bring my partner/family to therapy?

While it is ideal that everyone involved in an issue be present, we understand that is not always possible. We will work together to find ways to engage your partner or family members in the therapy process but if they will not come you are still welcome to therapy.

Do Marriage and Family Therapists only see married couples?

All definitions of a couple are accepted as clients at Sampson Family Therapy Services. Marriage is not a requirement for treatment. We foster an environment of support and diversity. All couples are welcome.

What can I expect from my therapist?

All clients can expect any of the Sampson Family Therapy Services associates to display honesty, integrity, confidentiality, and appreciation for diverse clientele. We operate with a philosophy of open communication that serves the best interest of the client’s needs. You can expect flexibility and responsibility in your therapist with appreciation for personal and professional boundaries.

Can I use my insurance?

Each clinician accepts different insurance plans. It is necessary for the client to contact their insurance company prior to the start of therapy to know whether their plan covers mental health and substance abuse services. Not all issues bringing clients to therapy are covered services.  To be covered by insurance the presenting problem must be considered medically necessary of treatment. A clinician at Sampson Family Therapy Services will further clarify this concept upon request.

What can I expect from my first session?

A first session is dedicated to assessing the needs of the client(s) and identify any areas of strength and concern. Your therapist will review your intake paperwork, give you information on the process of therapy, and discuss the options for use of insurance.

Things to keep in mind:

  • If you plan to drive know that parking is metered or pay-ramp downtown.

  • Bring your completed paperwork and insurance card.

  • Expect to spend approximately 50 minutes or more in the first session.
